GarymosaicMosaic artist, Gary Drostle

QESTlogoGOLDRGB1Committed to creating finely crafted works of art for landscape and architecture since 1986...

Below you will find some testimonials, a list of awards and a short biography.

"As Arts Co-ordinator for Integrated Arts Projects in South and East Belfast Trust's new Community Treatment and Care Centres, I am delighted to have been involved in Gary's first mosaic work in N. Ireland.

Body and Spirit, is a beautiful, thoughtfully conceived artwork that combines personal reflection with universal themes.

This creativity is combined with a thoroughly professional and practical approach so that issues of integration into architecture, working with other professionals, long-term maintenance and community contact are all addressed.

It has been a pleasure to work with Gary, to have our commission added to his exciting portfolio and I will follow his future activities with great interest."
Vivien Burnside, Arts Co-ordinator, South East Belfast HSS Trust

"Your two pieces of artwork in Erith High Street; Mosaic (Stone Court outbuilding, next to The Cross Keys Pub) and Thames Barge Mural (The White Hart Pub), were installed as part of the SRB6 funded Environmental Improvements Project at the Erith Riverside Conservation Area. This involved you working with the Client (Bexley Council), various stakeholders, funding partners and the local community. The project's steering group carried out an evaluation and the level of satisfaction for your work, including presentation, quality of designs, information, expertise, conduct at meetings and overall organisation, was very highly rated. Well done and hope to work with you in the future - subject to funding!!"
Judith Houghton, Planning & Regeneration Officer, Bexley Council <>

"A very good service and installation. Always very helpful and professional."
Noel Hart, Director, Hart Associates Architects <>

"Gary was very keen to make sure the design was exactly what we wanted and was happy to modify the artwork to suit our ideas. The time between agreeing the design and completing the installation was only 4 months and I was impressed with the care shown on site and the finished product. I am happy to say it has already been much admired."
Nigel Burch, Project Director, London Borough of Redbridge <>

I was born in Woolwich, in South East London and studied fine art at Camberwell, St Martins and Middlesex Polytechnic schools of art. I also studied for a short while in Italy at the Cararra School of Marble Sculpture. Soon after leaving art college in 1985 I began working as a mural artist. I served on the executive of Haringey Arts Council for two years and have worked closely with many different community groups.

In my artwork I am interested in figure compositions and the chiaroscuro technique, (painting in black and white) I also have an interest in community languages, particularly calligraphy, and have studied Arabic and Chinese.

I began work painting murals in hospitals for two years after which I became a founding member of Haringey Mural Workshop. When the mural workshop disbanded in 1989 I started 'Wallscapes', initially working in collaboration with Belfast artist Ruth Priestly. I was joined by Rob Turner in 1990. Rob and I worked in collaboration as Wallscapes for over ten years, producing numerous successful public art projects across the UK. In 2001 Rob and myself decided we needed to go our own ways in order to explore and develop further our own work.

CentaurCropI now work from a studio in the centre of historic Greenwich in south east London, producing murals and mosaic works. In the last few years I have gained international recognition for my mosaics completing major commissions in Bedford, Lytham St Anne's, Staines, Cambridge, Belfast, London and Washington DC and giving keynote speeches at the London conference of British mosaic makers and the San Francisco and Chicago conferences of American mosaic makers.

In 2005 I was elected President of the British Association of Modern Mosaic and in 2006 received the prestigious 'Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust' award.
